Boogie Down South is one of Australia's premier celebrations of swing music and dance, bringing together outstanding live bands, world-class performers, and a welcoming community for a weekend that captures the energy and passion of Swing Music and Dancers. While dancers travel from across Australia and overseas to take part, the event is just as rewarding for audiences who simply want to experience exceptional live music and dazzling performances.
The roots of swing stretch back to the 1920s and 1930s, when jazz evolved into the energetic big band sound that filled ballrooms across the United States. Artists such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald helped define an era where music and social dancing became inseparable. Lindy Hop, often called the original swing dance, emerged amongst the Black American communities of Harlem's famous Savoy Ballroom, blending improvisation, athleticism and joyful social connection. Nearly a century later, swing continues to thrive around the world, bringing people together through live music, creativity and community.
Celebrating its 10th year, Boogie Down South is opening its doors to audiences so you can enjoy performances from some of Western Australia's finest jazz and rhythm bands, including Adam Hall & the Velvet Playboys, Adrian Hix & His Rhythm Six, and the powerhouse Oz Big Band. From classic swing standards and jump blues to driving big band favourites, the weekend showcases the timeless energy of live jazz performed by exceptional musicians.
Alongside the music are spectacular dance performances by some of Australia's leading swing dancers and internationally renowned guest instructors.
What makes Boogie Down South truly special is that it is entirely community-driven. Organised by local not-for-profit organisation South West Swing and run by passionate volunteers who donate countless hours behind the scenes, the event exists because of a shared love of swing music, dance and the friendships they create. Every ticket supports a vibrant volunteer community dedicated to preserving and sharing this unique cultural tradition.
Many visitors leave inspired to give swing dancing a try themselves. The good news is that Lindy Hop and other swing dances are taught in cities and regional communities across Australia – and around the world. Whether you live nearby or are visiting from interstate or overseas, there's almost certainly a welcoming swing dance class not far from home. No partner or previous experience is needed – just comfortable shoes and a willingness to have fun.
Whether you come for the music, the performances, the atmosphere or simple curiosity, Boogie Down South offers an unforgettable glimpse into one of the world's most joyful musical and cultural traditions.
